The University of Calcutta has issued a circular to its Affiliated colleges on Tuesday, 2nd July directing them to extend the 2019 admission dates to 10th July from the previous final date which was set on 7th July. The direction came after the West Bengal Ministry of Higher Education noticed a big number of unoccupied seats in the university between the admission process. The Ministry asked the university to extend dates to fill all the seats in UG.
A section of the faculties in the University is unhappy about the directives. They have expressed their concerns that this can hamper the timely conducting of semesters as the applications will be open even after the admission process starts. This will create issues to the students who would apply late for the admissions. The teaching faculties said this will cause problems in completing the first-semester syllabus.
Some colleges, however, did not open their admission portals as their admission process on the basis of Merit Lists are ongoing. The respective administrative councils of the colleges have said that their admission process is ongoing based on the Merit Lists. They will only open the portal if the seats are vacant after admissions.
The administrative department of Bethune College, Kolkata has said that their admission process on the merit list will be continued till 7th July. Then, the college will consider opening the admission portal if a considerable number of seats are vacant.
