- Delhi University has been asked to submit a compliance report to the High Court on its direction to allow admission for 301 additional law seats.
- Delhi HC received complaints from students stating that said DU Law Faculty was violating the HC order.
On October 11, 2017, the High Court of Delhi directed the authorities of the University of Delhi to submit a compliance report on its order to admit an additional 301 students in 3-year LLB course for the current academic session. Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar have sought the report from the university after receiving complaints against the law faculty that it is not admitting the additional students and is supposedly flouting the High Court order. Following these reports, the bench directed the varsity to disclose the compliance report.

With respect to DU's negligence in following the High Court order, a group of students had filed a petition seeking justice. Earlier, the Faculty of Law at DU submitted to the court a report that stated it has been admitting 2,310 students to the law courses since 2008. However, the petitioners claimed that the application for the admission to LLB course indicated 2,611 seats (including 301 supernumerary seats for students belonging to reserved category). Whereas, the counsel of Delhi University said that the supernumerary seats were included in the 2,310 seats.

The Bar Council of India’s decision to cap the number of seats in LLB by 300 per year was also challenged in the court. The petitioner pointed that limiting the number of seats in LLB course would be a disadvantage to the law aspirants since the competition for LLB course at Delhi University is high. The court also delivered the judgement in favour of students and removed the cap on LLB seats.
