DU Image Reflected at Ambedkar? Students Perplexed as Cutoff Soars High

A huge jump in Cutoff for the NCT (National Capital Territory) students has been seen in the Ambedkar University on the same line with DU for 2019 admissions in the Undergraduate courses. For the B.A. in Psychology alone, the cutoffs touched the mark of 97.75% this year where the cutoffs last year was 94.75% for the same programme in the University.

The Ambedkar University reserves 85% of its seats for students of National Capital Territory of Delhi like other Delhi State Universities. The University announces different cutoff for the home students and non-resident students. However, the rise in cutoff for the other state students in Ambedkar University is negligible where the Home students saw a high cutoff percentage. Which made the gap narrowed for students this year.

The highest cutoff in the college this year has been noticed for the BA Honours course with Psychology Major. The cutoff for other state students has been increased by 0.25% taking it to 98.5% from 98.25% previous year. Similarly, the cutoff for the Delhi NCT students, the cutoff rose by 3% at 97.75% from 94.75% a previous year which made the cutoff difference between NCT and Non-Resident students reduce to 0.75% from the previous 3.5%.

The steepest rise in the cutoffs in Ambedkar University has been noticed in the specialisations of BA in Sustainable Urbanism and BA in Global Studies which saw the cutoff rise by 10% and 10.5% respectively compared with the previous year.

The cutoff in BA in Sustainable Urbanism at Ambedkar University is set at 85.5% and for the BA Global Studies course, it is set at 92.5% respectively. Both courses saw cutoffs of 75.5% and 82% respectively in the 2018 admissions. On the other hand, the cutoffs for non-resident students have been raised by 1% and 2.5% respectively from the previous year making the other-state cutoff for BA Sustainable Urbanism and Global Studies 90.5% and 94.75% respectively.

The similar case is noticed at the BA Honours in English and Sociology courses which are seen as the most popular courses at DU as well. The cutoff in English Honours course in Ambedkar University stood at 96.25% from the previous year’s 92.5% and for Sociology, the cutoffs have been set at 96.25% from 92.75% of the previous year.

The University was known for giving relief to the students who could not make it to DU due to the high cutoffs. Although this year, the cutoffs are speaking of a different scenario. The cutoff in the Ambedkar University courses has been made at par with the DU course cutoffs which is creating perplexities about the admission decisions in the mind of the UG aspirants.

Justifying the rise, the Ambedkar University PRO, Ms Anju Singh has said that the cutoffs are a matter of pure mathematics and just like other universities, it is determined by the number of students applying in the university and their acquired percentage in the 12th passing level for a particular course. She added that the applicants from Delhi have much high aggregate scores in school level passing examinations.
