Former IAS Officer Alka Sirohi Appointed as New Chairperson of UPSC
Shri Pranab Mukherjee, President of India, has appointed former IAS Officer, Alka Sirohi as the new Chairperson of UPSC ie. the Union Public Service Commission. She will assume the charge on September 21, 2016. Alka Sirohi has been appointed in place of Deepak Gupta who has demitted the office on September 20, 2016. The newly appointed chairperson will hold the office until January 3, 2017.
Alka Sirohi is the member of the Commission. The UPSC had broken away from the tradition of appointing a chief among the serving members of the commission in the year 2014, by appointing Deepak Gupta. However, again, the newly appointed Chairperson is a retired IAS Officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre. Previously, Alka Sirohi had served as the Secretary of Department of Personel and Training.
The Commission is headed by a Chairperson and can have a maximum of 10 members. UPSC conducts the prestigious Civil Services examination to select officers of Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.
