Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh visited the Economics Department of Panjab University. He turned nostalgic after having a glance at the Economics department. The former PM was an alumnus of Panjab University, and he was also a senior lecturer in the Economics department.
Dr. Manmohan Singh delivered the first SB Rangnekar (Founder of PU Economics Department) memorial lecture on April 11, 2018. He delivered the lecture on the topic ‘The 70th Anniversary of our Independence – Strengthening the Roots of our Democracy’. Later, Manmohan Singh and his wife Gurusharan Kaur visited the Economics department of the varsity and interacted with the students and faculty members over there.

Dr. Singh remembered that after the partition of the country, Economics department of PU was located in Hoshiarpur.
During his lecture, Dr. Singh recalled his association with PU and Rangnekar. On this occasion, he remembered that it was Rangnekar who inspired him to go to Cambridge after the completion of M.A Economics in 1957.
After returning from Cambridge, Dr. Singh joined as the senior lecturer of Economics department. He was very much privileged to work with Rangnekar who was the Head of Economics department during those days.

Dr. Manmohan Singh also donated 3,500 books to the Alma matter of the Panjab University. These books will be kept in the Guru Tej Bahadur Bhawan on the campus of PU.
In March 1983, Panjab University awarded Doctor of Letters to Manmohan Singh. Similarly, Dr. Manmohan Singh chair was created in the Economics department of the Panjab University in 2009. In April 2016, Dr. Singh took up a job in the varsity again as Jawaharlal Nehru Chair.
