Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology has received a great response for admissions despite the prevailing COVID-19 situation. The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala (IIITM-K), the premier institute, got an upgrade to digital university through an ordinance, which was passed in January.

The number of applications received by the university for the PhD courses is roughly 500 and the number of vacancies is just 30. A lot of takers applied for regular PhD, which is a new option, the Industry Regular Ph.D. also had many takers.

Under the innovative, 'Industry Regular' programme, which focuses on utilising the industry and academia expertise, applicants can propose their workplace or an industry research lab for their PhD. The scholars can collaborate with a mentor from the industry for research on a real-life problem, something which is likely to help the IT professionals to take up doctoral programmes, without opting for a career break.

A reason for DUK's PhD programmes gaining popularity is that it covers a range of unique topics such as Computational Intelligence, AI Robotics, Computational Imaging System. Out of 442 applications to its 4 schools, 259 applicants opted for regular PhDs and 169 opted for part-time. The admission for PhD began from May 3, 2021, onward. The response received for the PhD indicates that there is a demand for good quality research in digital technology and sciences, according to Dr Saji Gopinath, VC, DUK.

He also said since Kerala is advancing towards a knowledge-based society, it needs more talent, capable of producing knowledge-based services and products. PhD interviews will be conducted next week and the PhD programme will begin by August. Along with the PhD, M.Sc and M.Tech courses admission will also begin in August. The university is also offering specialised courses on various contemporary topics such as AI Hardware, AI, Cyber-Physical Systems and Signal processes, Cyber Security Engineering to name a few.

M.Sc in Cyber Security, Machine Intelligence, Ecological Informatics, Computational Economics are likely to be a major solution to the huge demand for candidates with practical and academic knowledge in the latest technologies.
