HRD Ministry May Screen Educational Content in Cinema Halls

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development is planning to screen educational content in cinema halls located in small towns across the country. NASSCOM, an umbrella body of IT (Information Technology) Industry in India, has initiated the move. If the plan gets approval, HRD Ministry will relay courses through Swayam Prabha, a DTH channel run by the ministry in cinema halls located in Tier II towns and urban areas where the population is less than one lakh.

If the plan gets approval, the unutilised potential of thousands of cinema halls across the country will be boosted through this simple measure. The idea is to screen the educational content between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM or school timings of the concerned locality. On the other hand, the educational content can also be screened on Sundays and holidays.

An official associated with MHRD pointed that there are numerous single screen theatres in India, which are unutilised. Therefore, screening educational content in these theatres will not only an advantage to students but also the managements of these theatres. On the other hand, viewing the educational content on giant screens will have a big impact, and students can have a clear understanding of a particular topic. As of now, the idea has been proposed and the cost of the project along with other modalities needs to be worked out.

Swayam Prabha was launched in August 2016, and it has been receiving a tremendous response from students. A major advantage of Swayam Prabha is that students can clear their doubts after watching the content through a toll-free number.
