Hyderabad University withdraws dress code for annual convocation

With staunch opposition from the student community, the University of Hyderabad has withdrawn the dress code for the annual convocation.
Ever since the University decided to have dress code Kurta-Pyjama, Kurta-Dhoti (for men), Sarees and Salwar Kameej (for women) for the XVII convocation scheduled on October 1, the students were up in arms.
The decision of the University came after the University Grants Commission had directed the universities to have a dress code for the convocation ceremony.
As many as 100 students protested at the university administration to withdraw the code imposed on the students on Monday. According to the sources, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile after holding a meeting with heads of departments, decided that students can wear their choice of clothes.
University Controller of the Examination, V Krishna said, “The University always respects the personal choice of wearing the clothes and clarifies that the dress prescribed for the convocation was only indicative and suggestive.”
