So far, Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU has awarded around 11 lakh certificates to the personnel of Army and Indian Air Force for successfully completing courses in various levels. Through the vertical mobility scheme, IGNOU has conferred 1,413 graduation certificates out of the total 11,28,754 certificates. IGNOU trains personnel of Indian Airforce under the ‘Akashdeep’ scheme and Army personnel under the ‘Gyandeep’ project. These courses will enable them to secure jobs after retirement.
Explaining the process, Director of IGNOU’s Defence Unit revealed that the varsity recognises the achievements of defence personnel during their service period. Later, the varsity equates these achievements to the standards of IGNOU and transfers them credits. Through this process, the varsity is encouraging defence personnel to take up various courses for a lateral entry.

Out of these, the ‘Akashdeep’ and ‘Gyandeep’ schemes have turned out to be very successful. ‘Sagardeep’ scheme, on the other hand, has not received much response from the personnel of Indian Navy. There were not many applicants under this scheme.

IGNOU has extended the deadline for completing the registration process for the admission to UG, Post Graduate and Post Graduate Diploma programmes. August 28, 2017, is the deadline to complete the application process. All the candidates whose admission has been confirmed so far can download the Identity Card by logging in with the valid login credentials.
