IIMs Request Government to Allow Awarding Degree for One-Year Executive PG course

The IIMs have requested the government to think about the possibility of awarding masters degree for the one-year PG course for executives. A meeting was held between the higher education secretary and the IIM directors last week wherein the IIMs have urged the government to reconsider it.

The HRD Ministry had issued an order on 8th March to all the 20 institutes stating that the IIMs will have to get the government’s permission to award a degree that isn’t in accordance with the United Grants Commission (UGC) notification. The new rule removed the possibility of IIMs awarding degrees to those pursuing the one-year executive PG programme because as per the UGC act, a master’s degree in management needs to be of two years. HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar emphasized this again in a meeting with the IIM chairpersons.

An IIM Director on condition of anonymity said they have informed the ministry about issuing degrees to one-year executive PG graduates assuming that the ministry may reconsider their stance. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Pan IIM World Management Conference, and the IIMs also requested the ministry to rethink about the eligibility criteria laid down by the government for the doctoral programme.

The IIMs also want the government to look at the Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) requirement of 8 for direct entry of candidates with a four-year degree or B.Tech. The business schools now want this CGPA to be revised to 6. Apart from this, they also want that they should be given permission to allow candidates even with a one-year PG Diploma as compared to the two-year diploma decided by the government.

The HRD Ministry had written in October to all 20 business schools stating that they can allow students with a four-year BA degree directly in the Ph.D. programme. The duration of this course for such candidates is four years and those with a minimum CGPA of 8 or its equivalent can only apply.

For a three-year doctoral programme, the ministry stated that candidates should either have a master’s degree or a professional degree such as CA/CS/ICWA with B.Com or two-year PG diploma.
