IIM Calcutta renames its 1year PGPEX degree to MBA for Executives. This way, this one-year diploma will be acknowledged as a degree programme and it will gain more acceptance.
The Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX) at Indian Institute of Management - IIM Calcutta is soon to be altered with the name ‘Masters of Business Administrator for Executives’ or MBA for executives. The renaming, of the course, is made to pave the way of acknowledging the 1 year PG course to a full MBA degree course in IIM Calcutta. The renaming process will also upscale the status of Post Graduate Diploma which companies were hesitant to approve for eligibility. However, the step is not new. IIM Calcutta is the third IIM institute to take the decision after IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore took the decision previously and changed the name.
IIM Calcutta has informed that in the convocation which will be held on April 6th, the institute will offer an MBA for Executives degree to students instead of the PGPEX degree that was awarded previously. This year, the MBA for Executive degree will be awarded to 66 students. The course was started in 2006 with the previous degree PGPEX.
With the nod of the ‘Board of Governors,’ the highest administrative house of IIM Calcutta, the course name has been approved to change from the current batch which is the 12th batch in the institute in the course.
The change of the degree named has been done as per the provision of the IIM Act only after the BOG has conveyed their consent.
Earlier, the BOG had approved awarding the Ph.D. degree to 2-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) students. The international nomenclature for a business degree is more accepting towards MBA and Ph.D. degrees that PGDM degrees, keeping the importance of these degrees in mind, the board of governors is in the process of changing the degree names for a higher acceptance. No institute worldwide offered PGDM degree in management courses.

A faculty informed that the renaming of courses will make IIM Calcutta more acceptable to stakeholders as per their expectations from a business education institute as IIM is a world-class institute.
