Union Minister of Human Resource and Development, Prakash Javadekar said that IIMs would play a significant role in developing 20 world class institutes in the country. He made this statement in a meet with the Directors of IIMs on September 20, 2016. The meeting took place at IIM Shillong. Various issues have been discussed in the meeting like increasing quality education in the country, increasing intake at IIMs, reservation policy for the recruitment of faculty at IIMs and so on and so forth.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the minister said that IIMs would take part in a new initiative of the government to make 20 world class institutes/universities. He mentioned that, among the 20 institutes, ten institutes would come under the government sector and the rest of the ten under the private sector.
The minister also stated that IIMs would play an essential role in creating content materials for Open Online Courses which were launched by the ministry recently. The courses are available under SWAYAM. The premier institutes will develop content from Class 9 to Postgraduate level covering all the major disciplines.
Earlier, he interacted with the students of IIM Shillong. Addressing the students, he said that the country needs ten million good teachers to improve the quality of education and research. He encouraged the students to take up teaching as a profession. He remembered Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on the occasion and henceforth motivated the students to inculcate a willingness to adopting teaching as a profession.
