IISc Bangalore and CGWB Sign MoA for Conducting Ground Water Research

IISc Bangalore and CGWB Sign MoA for Conducting Ground Water Research

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) of Ministry of Water Resources has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with an objective to develop ground water flow models and preparation of aquifer management plans for various parts of Karnataka.

Considering the dilapidated ground water conditions in different parts of Karnataka, CGWB decided to develop aquifer mapping and management programme. The idea is to increase the ground water level for future generations. Therefore, CGWB has entered into a partnership with IISc to carry out ground water research and frame a development plan for improving ground water level.

The research that will be conducted by IISc and CGWB for ground water research which will cover an area of 48,000 sq.kms including Kolar and Chikballpur districts. The study on ground water resources will also be conducted in parts of Gulbarga, Yadgir, Bellary, Davangere, Bangalore Rural and Belgaum districts.

According to the agreement, IISc Bangalore has to complete the research within one year and submit an inception report followed by a final comprehensive report. The inception must be submitted within two months after signing the MoA. IISc Bangalore will work on a detailed plan, areas of study and other issues outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement.

On the other hand, the final report will elaborate various details including ground water issues, model study plan, response of ground water system to different scenarios, data analysis, hydrological setting and others.

The MoA was signed in the presence of the officials of both the organisations.
