Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and University at Buffalo (US) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for conducting joint research in cyber security and various environment related issues. The significant pact was signed on July 17, 2017. President of University at Buffalo, Mr. Satish Tripati and Director of IIT Kanpur, Mr. Indranil Manna signed the agreement. Both IIT Kanpur and Buffalo University have collaborated for the first time to promote joint research.
Through this MoU, the professors from Buffalo University and IIT Kanpur will select the research scholars. However, both the premier institutes award separate certificates to the research scholars and the final degree certificate will be jointly given by both the premier institutes to the successful candidates.

Promoting joint research in Cyber Security is a key aspect in the current scenario. Collaborations with international universities for conducting joint research projects will improve the quality of research output in India. Many Indian institutes lack facilities in terms of research output that is affecting the global rankings. Therefore, it is time for the Indian institutes to attract international faculty and students through various pacts and agreements.

The 50th Foundation Day celebrations of IIT Kanpur took place on June 16, 2017. On this occasion, IIT Kanpur conferred a doctorate on athlete P.T. Usha. She received Doctor of Science title from the premier engineering institute. IIT Kanpur conferred a doctorate on her in recognition of her achievements as one of the best athlete pioneers in India.
