With the launch of the Government’s new policy of Internationalisation, many foreign students have chosen to pursue their higher education from various premier institutes in India. One such premier institute in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, has witnessed an inflow of around 220 applications from international students.
Sources have stated that the IIT Kharagpur has received close to 220 applications for the current academic year. Out of these 220 applications, 11 international students have already joined the programmes of their choice.
Among the courses that these international applicants have chosen include different programmes at the postgraduate level, i.e. M.Tech. The courses chosen include Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology as well as Aerospace Engineering, etc. One of the International applicants has preferred to pursue an MBA programme that is offered by the Vinod Gupta School of Management, meanwhile, an application for a PhD programme that is offered by the School of Medical Science and Technology at the IIT Kharagpur has also been received.
IIT Kharagpur has received applications from various countries such as the SAARC countries which include Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan. Along with these countries, there have been applications from ASEAN countries such as Laos and Vietnam. Applications all the way from Latin America have also been received which include Venezuela and Columbia. Several applications were also received from African countries such as Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan Zimbabwe. Other countries include Uzbekistan, Fiji, Palestine, Syria, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea as well.
IIT Kharagpur offers various funding and scholarship programmes for international students like the Asoke Dey Sarkar International Programme, which focuses on providing the funding to the students belonging to SAARC countries and Gopal Rajgarhia International Programme, which has been dedicated to providing funding to the international students who wish to pursue their Master’s or PhD. Sources have stated that IIT Kharagpur has received a total of 50 applications from different countries for the non-degree programmes, out which, 13 applications were accepted to the programmes via different funding programmes.
The Associate Dean of International Relations at the IIT Kharagpur, Anandroop Bhattacharya has stated that with the help of the policy that has been brought in by the Government of India as well as the efforts that have been put in by the institute themselves, they expect to see an increase in the number of applications that are being received from different countries.
