IIT Kharagpur has announced high-value scholarship to the students from the University of Melbourne who wish to enrol under the Dual Degree Programme, jointly offered by the two institutes. Each student will be offered a competitive AUD 30,000 scholarship funding.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-K) has announced that they will be facilitating high-value scholarship for students, under the Dual Degree Programme (DDP), the University of Melbourne. This has been done in order to boost the academic exchange programme between Indian and Australian programmes.
The officiating Director of IIT Kharagpur, Sriman Kumar Bhattacharya, announced the high-value scholarships during the inauguration programme of Melbourne India Partnership Programme and Academy Conference.
Under the Dual Degree Programme (DDP), which is jointly offered by the two premier educational institutions, the enrolled students will receive yearly funding. Each student will be offered AUD 30,000 or ₹14.6 lakhs (which is equal to the home scholarships). As per an IIT Kharagpur statement, the amount has been aimed at helping the student pay off the tuition fee along with living, travel and other expenses, thus reducing the burden on the students.
In the initial stages, two foreign students the University who will be travelling to India will be offered the high-value scholarship. The scholarship will be applicable from the academic session beginning 2020-21.
The Joint Doctoral programmes that IIT Kharagpur with the Australian Universities, the students are expected to undertake research initiatives under the joint supervision of the faculty members of both the institutions. Students will be expected to write a single thesis, which will be reviewed individually by both the institutions, as per their own standards. For the student to receive the Joint Doctoral Degree, the thesis needs to be approved by both the institutes.
The Joint Doctoral Programme, offered by IIT Kharagpur and the University of Melbourne, was launched in 2018 and since the launch, 9 students from IIT Kharagpur, have taken admission in the programme. However, only one student from the Australian University took admission under the programme.
Baidurya Bhattacharya, Dean of International Relations at IIT Kharagpur, stated that the institute has taken into considerations the Australian students require financial assistance as well. He stated that many of the international students provide support to their families with the stipend they receive.
Following the steps taking by International Institutions offering high-value scholarships to the Indian students, the IIT Kharagpur International Relations stated that they will need to offer similarly attractive and competitive scholarships, which can be availed by the International students.

IIT Kharagpur has been partnering up with various International Institutes such as the University of Alberta Canada and the University of Auckland, where joint doctoral programmes have also been introduced. In Australia, the Institute jointly offers various Joint Doctoral programmes with Universities like James Cook, Wollongong and Curtin. The aim of conducting the joint doctoral programmes have been to enhance the academic and research partnership between the two countries, from scratch.

Moreover, IIT Kharagpur has been working on offering scholarships to international students from ASEAN and SAARC countries, so that they stand an equal chance to explore the research initiatives as well.
