IIT Kharagpur has decided to fund the Under Graduate Research Program for Autumn semester with one or two credit awards. The research will be selected by the institute and fund will be granted from the alumni endowment fund.
The Indian Institute of Technolgy - IIT Kharagpur decides to introduce and sponsor a research program for its Undergraduate level Autumn semester in 2019-20 academic year. The main of the institute is to increase the interest of students in research related works in future.
Prof. P. P. Chakrabarti, IIT Kharagpur said that the ability to carry out research projects is now considered as one of the basic graduating criteria in IIT Kharagpur. With the aim of making students proficient in problem-solving and innovation, the institute will carry out the Undergraduate Research Program (UGRP) to promote the research ideas among the students.
The IIT Kharagpur will fund the research projects that are proposed by the students. The projects will be chosen on a competitive basis and a faculty of associated subject and the department will be guiding the researchers under UGRP.
An official statement issued by IIT Kharagpur said that with the aim of encouraging them in participating in competitive projects, a competitive grant 56 lakh rupees will be funded by the Institute which has been supporting various kinds of co-curricular activities carried out by UG students for fellowship and travel grants.
The institute has made it clear that a total of 20 proposals will be selected by the Institute for funding under UGRP. The selected group for each project will be given 25,000 rupees for carrying out a one-credit project and 50,000 rupees will be granted for two-credit projects taken up by the group of students.

The institute had introduced an endowment program under which 50lakh to 1crore rupees is being raised by one of two alumni batches of IIT Kharagpur each year. The funding for the Under Graduate Research Program (UGRP) will be taken from the fund that has been raised by the Alumni.

An online portal is underway in the Institute for submission un the research project. The institute is hopeful that it can contribute to academics as the B.Tech thesis projects done by the students.
