IIT Ropar Felicitates 130 Students at its 5th Convocation

The newly established Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) felicitated 130 students with graduate and post-graduate degrees at its 5th Annual Convocation on November 21 (Monday), 2016 at their campus.

Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Prof. Ashutosh Sharma graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He also delivered the convocation address. The convocation ceremony was presided over by Ms. Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson, Board of Governors – IIT Ropar and Prof. S.K. Das, Director IIT Ropar.

Four students received special awards for their outstanding performances. They were -

  • Gaurav Mittal from Computer Science & Engineering got President of India Gold Medal
  • Amogh Agrawal from Electrical Engineering got Director Gold Medal
  • Nekkanti Akhil, Mechanical Engg got Institute Silver Medal
  • Amogh Agrawal, Electrical Engg got Institute Silver Medal

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Lila Poonawalla ,the Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Ropar welcomed all the young graduates and conveyed her best wishes. With the changing times and technology, there is an urgent need for innovation, in products, services as well as in everyone's life. She also congratulated all the students and faculty members for their exceptional work and efforts that have brought the institute into the 9th position in the 2016 NIRF Rankings brought out by MHRD.

It is to be noted that IIT Ropar is one of the new IITs that has been awarded 9th position in the (NIRF) rankings in the year 2016 and has also proved to be excellent in teaching and research at an International level. The institute has also made a mark in its infrastructure and has recently been awarded 5 star GRIHA rating for the master-plan of its upcoming campus.

The Chief Guest Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, in his address, said that 21st century is the century of knowledge and today India is strongly investing in higher education to help its march towards becoming a major knowledge and economic superpower. He also expressed his satisfaction over IIT Ropar featuring among the top engineering institutions in the country and the institute would definitely help to establish its mark by solving some of the complex challenges.

Director, IIT Ropar Prof. S.K Das said that the Institute is on a path of fascinating growth.It has been an exciting year of planning, achievements, expansion & renewed of hopes. The institute from its strength of 800 students has grown to 2500 students within a span of 3 years and number of new departments have come up.

New departments that have come up are-

  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Material Engineering

Of the 130 students felicitated with graduate and post-graduate degrees, 18 received PhD and 112 graduated in B. Tech.
