Indian Institutes of Technology are planning to launch an Executive M.Tech course designed primarily for working professions. The primary objective behind introducing this course is to ensure more IITians opt for research work.

Currently, IITs are offering a two-year M.Tech course where the students are being paid Rs. 12,400 as fellowship per month. On the other hand, IITs charge Rs. 20,000 per annum for M.Tech course. With an objective to increase revenue, IITs are charging Rs. 20,000 per annum as fees by considering the market rate. The fees charged by IITs for M.Tech course is less compared to other private engineering institutions across India. Therefore, there is high demand for M.Tech course at IITs.

According to sources, IITs are planning to bring some changes in M.Tech course curriculum and launch an executive programme for working professions. The Executive M.Tech programme will cater to the needs of working professionals who are already in the field. It will be a one-year course and fees will be charged as per the market rates.

One of the officials mentioned that the revenue that is generated from Executive M.Tech programme would cross-subsidise the regular M.Tech programme and it will help IITs to avoid losses. Currently, out of 72,000 students pursuing various courses in IITs, 14,000 are M.Tech students.

Earlier, most of the IITs also reported that the students are ditching the course mid-way and taking up the jobs in Public Sector Undertakings or PSUs. These institutes are facing difficulty as students leave course mid-way.

One of the officials explained that their main motive is to encourage more students to take up research and M.Tech programme is the step to carrying out exceptional research work. IITs are also planning to launch sponsored M.Techs by industry for which the actual cost of the course will be charged.

A committee has been formed which comprises directors of various IITs to study the possibilities for launching the course. The committee will submit the detailed report to HRD ministry soon. Currently, various IIMs in India are offering Executive MBA course.
