MSDE Minister Lays Foundation Stone for Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai

The foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Skills in Mumbai has been laid down by Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai will be one of the three IISs that have been envisioned by PM Modi.

Foundation Stone of IIS Mumbai Laid

To promote a more skill-based education among the youth of India, the foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) was laid in Mumbai. Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) was appointed with the task of laying down the foundation stone for the institute. As per sources, the Union Cabinet had approved the establishment of IISs in the cities of Kanpur, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Sources state that the Indian Institute of Skills will be working on the model of Public-Private Partnership and under the Not-for-Profit basis. Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, at the foundation ceremony, stated that the entire idea of a skills institute was visualised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The MSDE Minister stated that the PM’s visit to the Vocational Education and Training Centre in Singapore spawned the idea of the institute. The objective of such an institute for skills will provide to the requirements of the modern and international markets by providing a world-renowned education and training.

Sources state that the Indian Institute of Skills will be work on the models followed by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Furthermore, the institute will be offering “first-hand learning facilities” from the different skills institutions that are internationally renowned.

At the ceremony, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey stated that there is a need for developing a skilled workforce in the country. Stating that India is currently known for “Make-in-India”, India will now be known for “Skilled-in-India”. He added that the Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai will be focusing on providing the students with the set of marketable skills so as to meet the industrial needs. He stated that the candidates will be able to train themselves in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Automation, Cyber Technology, Machine Learning, Energy Consumptions and many other fields.

Through the programmes that will be offered to the students, the Institute will be able to compete with the international markets and industries. Along with these factors, the Institute also aims to provide the students with the option of becoming a part of the “new-age industrial economy”, stated the MSDE Minister.

Those who are interested in pursuing a technical programme after completing their class 10 and 12 board examinations will be able to join the institute, sources state. They further added that the students will be industry-ready at the end of the programmes.

The private partner in the initiative is the Tata Education Development Trust (TEDT). TEDT will be responsible for establishing the IIS at the National Skill Training Institute Mumbai (NSTI). As per the agreement, TEDT has been offered the land by the Government for a span of 25 years. TEDT will be analysing the overall performance of the outcome of the institute, which will take place every five years. Sources state that TEDT has invested around ₹300 crores in building and equipping the institute with the best-in-class infrastructure and facilities for the students. The goal of the institute is to produce a minimum of 5000 trainees with a placement opportunity per cent of 70%.
