A total number of 63 Indian students among the 24,000 applicants worldwide selected for Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme offered by European Union (EU). Indian students were the second largest beneficiaries of this global scholarship scheme. Brazil registered the highest number of beneficiaries. The selected students will pursue Master’s degree in Europe, and European Union (EU) will cover all the costs under the scholarship scheme.
In the year 2017, around 1,345 students were selected for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme. The scholarship scheme started in the year 1987. In the first year, the scholarship scheme benefitted 3,200 students. Now, around 3,00,000 students are availing the benefit of this scholarship scheme every year.

Besides the countries of EU or the European Union, five other countries also signed up for Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme. Today, scholars from 120 countries are availing the benefits of this scholarship scheme.
A total number of 79 students were selected for Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme from Brazil followed by 63 students from India, 59 from Iran, 58 from Bangladesh and 49 students from Mexico.
Through this scholarship programme, 513 institutions are offering more than 100 joint masters degree programmes. A consortium of at least three institutes for higher learning offers a masters degree programme.

This year, around 40 new masters degree programmes will be offered under this scholarship scheme that includes business, nanotechnology, economics, astrophysics etc.,
The application process for the next selection round will commence in October 2017 and will continue until January 2018.
