A sum of Rs. 2.94 crore has been granted by North Eastern Council (NEC) to Jamia Millia Islamia for upgradation of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (CNESPR). For this purpose, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Jamia and NEC.
NEC is a Shillong-based council which comes under Ministry of Development of North Esat Region (DONER). The ministry has provided financial assistance to CNESPR to carry out research on the main issues that are confronting North East Region such as inclusive growth, migration, gender, governance, literature and reflections, state and civil society, climate change, tradition and modernity, disaster management and Act East policy.

NEC has granted Rs. 2.94 crore for five years and the MoU has been signed between KH Siile Anthoney, Director, HRD, Shillong and A. P. Siddiqui, Registrar, Jamia.
Currently, NEC has been roped in for the process of development in eight states and for playing a significant role in contributing to the socio-economic development of the people living in NE region. It also provides financial assistance to various schemes and projects in different sectors like agriculture, transport, communication, science and technology, irrigation and flood control, power, health and HRD.

The CNESPR was established in the year 2009, and since then it has been playing a major role in leading research and documentation centre for the north-east region. It has also been conducting various seminars, workshops, cultural events, public lectures, research addressing and other activities on the issues confronting the north-east region.
