Ministry of Human Resource and Development has announced a scholarship scheme for top 2000 rankers of the JEE Main 2017 examination. The ministry clarified that the scholarship scheme is under review and separate instructions will be issued on the same in due course of time. Currently, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) 2017 has been given the responsibility to prepare guidelines for the scholarship scheme.
JEE Main 2017 is an entrance examination that is conducted for admissions to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Government Funding Technical Institutes (GFTIs). It is also a first stage exam for admissions to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Every year, around 12-13 lakh candidates appear for this national level engineering test.
There are 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India which offer around 18,000 undergraduate seats. The candidates who qualify in JEE Mains will have a chance to get admissions in NITs.
Currently, HRD Ministry is also planning to scrap all the engineering entrance examinations and introduce a single national-level engineering entrance examination. A standing committee has proposed that JEE Mains can be replaced by Engineering Aptitude Test to avoid all the confusions so that it becomes easier for the candidates. The proposal for introducing single entrance exam was made for the first time in the year 2012. However, the plan was not implemented due to various reasons.
