Jamia Milia Islamia has received assurance to set up the medical college by the centre and has appointed a coordinator for the same. Furqan Qamar Professor, Center for Management Studies has been appointed as the coordinator who would explore the steps required to establish the medical college.
According to Furqan Qamar, they are looking at all the step required for the establishment of medical college along with the guidelines provided by the regulatory bodies. He also informed that an advisory committee would also be formed which will consist of eminent professionals from the field of medicine & other universities medical faculty. They will begin working on a feasibility report that looks at the physical facilities, infrastructure, human resources, and financial resources required to establish a medical college.
The development comes after barely two weeks of meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the meeting, Jamia Milia's Vice-Chancellor discussed the need for a medical college with the PM. According to university officials, the demand for medical colleges is rising to bridge the gap in the country's trained health professionals. There is a shortage of high-quality health care professionals in the country. Also, this has been a long-standing demand of JMI Fraternity to have a medical college.
As of now, JMI has a dental college which offers BDS and Physiotherapy course.
