JNU Holds Convocation Ceremony after 46 Years, 400 Students Receive Degrees

JNU organised its second convocation on 8th August after a gap of 46 years. Ph.D. scholars were awarded degrees and were praised for their outstanding contribution in the field of research at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

JNU Holds Convocation Ceremony after 46 Years, 400 Students Receive Degrees

Jawaharlal Nehru University organised its second convocation after 46 years. The varsity held its first convocation ceremony in the year 1972 when Mr. G. Parthasarathi was the Vice Chancellor. The event triggered a controversy back then due to the controversial speech delivered by the students’ union president V.C. Koshy.

JNU in its second convocation ceremony awarded degrees to Ph.D. holders. The event took place on August 08, 2018, with an agenda to recognise the positive efforts made by the scholars and celebrate the outstanding work done by them.

Among the former students who collected their degrees at the JNU second convocation ceremony on Wednesday was 78-year-old Vishnu Swaroop Saksena, a retired postal department employee. In 1998, Saksena, then 58-years-old, had enrolled in the university. He was present at the convocation ceremony along with his wife, two sons and a daughter to collect the degree.

Chancellor of JNU, VK Saraswat was the Chief Guest of JNU second convocation ceremony that took place at AICTE auditorium near JNU.

JNU Vice-Chancellor, Mr.M Jagadesh Kumar who was also present at the event indicated that the varsity was committed to encouraging critical thinking and freedom of thought among its faculty and students. The best ideas are born when minds are independent to think critically. JNU is committed to this critical thought and freedom of thinking with an emphasis on our fundamental/ basic responsibilities, he added.
