JNU to Increase M.Phil and Ph.D. Intake from 102 to 720

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has officially announced that the intake for the Ph.D. and M.Phil courses during the next session will be 720 instead of existing 102. The varsity is set to increase the intake of these courses by six fold. Recently, the varsity confirmed the dates and schedule of entrance examination that will take place from December 27 to December 30, 2017.

According to an official notification issued by the University Grants Commission or UGC (2016), a research supervisor or co-supervisor in the designation of professor could not guide more than eight Ph.D. scholars and three M.Phil students. An associate professor in the designation of research supervisor can guide six Ph.D. and two M.Phil scholars. An assistant process can guide four Ph.D. scholars and one M.Phil scholar.

After the implementation of UGC Notification (2016), there were massive seat cuts in Ph.D. and M.Phil programmes at Jawaharlal Nehru University, sparking protests among the students.

For the current academic session, the seats had been reduced by 86%, bringing the total number of seats from 920 to 102. Surprisingly, few departments of the varsity had not advertised the seats for the academic session. These departments were not allocated seats and recorded a ‘zero’ year.

The issue connected with massive seat cuts in M.Phil and Ph.D. courses were brought up by JNUSU during polls. The winning panel, i.e., JNUSU assured that they would sort out the issue and take steps for increasing intake.

Newly elected President of JNUSU revealed that the varsity has not given any clarity on the process through which seats will be increased. The varsity has not listed the list of intake in each department.
