JNU to Set up School of Indian Languages

Jawaharlal Nehru University in an attempt to promote Indian languages and research is planning to set up a school which will offer courses in Hindi, Urdu, Kannada and Assamese among others. The varsity offers language courses in French, German, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Persian through its "School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies.

Since the university does not offer any Indian languages for research, it decided to include them too.

The university is looking forward to setting up a School of Indian languages which will undertake Masters programmes and research courses in Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi, Assamese Bengali and Oriya languages," a senior varsity official said.

"A proposal regarding the same has been sent to all the departments and schools under the university for their feedback on the same. Once the feedbacks are received, the matter will be placed before the Academic Council (AC) for its approval," the official added.

The School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies was established in 1969 and has emerged as a major center for teaching and research in Languages, Literatures and Cultures of India, Asia and Europe in India and abroad. Besides foreign languages and literature's, it also offers study and research in English, Urdu and Hindu.
