JNU Convocation

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided that the convocation ceremony this year will be held virtually due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic situation in the country. JNU will host an online convocation for its batch of 2020 in the month of November. The decision to conduct the convocation online has been taken since it not possible to conduct a physical convocation this year.

JNU's convocation of 2020 is the fourth convocation of the university as the ceremony had been revived in the year 2018 after the first convocation which was held in 1972. The executive council of Jawaharlal Nehru University said that a notification will be released soon in which students will be invited for the virtual ceremony. The council of the university, however, decided against hosting a physical convocation in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vice-chancellor of JNU, M. Jagadesh Kumar, stated that a convocation ceremony is all about celebrating the scholarly achievement of students after years of hard work done by the university, family members, and friends. He said that he believed that the convocation enhances the sense of belonging of students to their alma mater. Due to this importance, JNU has decided to conduct the convocation and make it a memorable event for the students in spite of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

All the schools, colleges, and other academic institutions of India are closed since March due to COVID-19. Several nationwide lockdowns were imposed in order to contain the spread of the deadly virus. The pandemic has affected the education sector adversely and students have suffered due to lack of resources to conduct online classes and exams. While the government has started the unlock procedure in the country, no latest updates have been released regarding the reopening of academic institutions.
