The cabinet of Karnataka State Government has decided to set up 4 new Medical Colleges in Karnataka, informed the Deputy Chief Minister of the State Mr CN Ashwath Narayan. Mr Narayan said while talking to ANI that the 4 medical colleges are set yo be established in 4 districts of Karnataka which is Chikkaballapur, Yadagiri, Chikkamagaluru and Haveri as the proposal of medical colleges have been approved by the cabinet.
It has been informed that a medical college was also proposed in Kanakapura which has been scrapped by the cabinet. While putting light on this matter, the deputy CM said that the state government holds the right to review any proposal until it is on the implementation stage. Kanakapura Medical College was still in the proposal stage which has been cancelled by the cabinet.
Mr. Narayan has said that the prime focus is to set up district-level medical colleges in the state and there is no plan to set up Taluka level medical colleges as of now. The Taluka level colleges can be discussed later. The cabinet scrapped Kanakapura as it was a Taluka.
Asking about the reports that the Kanakapura Medical College being shifted to Chikkaballapur, the deputy CM rejected it by saying that Chikkaballapur Medical College has nothing to do with Kanakapura. However, DK Shivakumar, a Congress Leader from Kanakapura has chosen to protest against the medical college being shifted from his constituency. As a previous Congress-JDS alliance government planned to set up a medical college in Chikkaballapura.
Many states are focusing to set up Medical Colleges at District Level. Karnataka has also decided to catch up as it will help in the development of the healthcare sector.
