The Kerala Government has announced district-wise public holidays on December 9 and 11 for undertaking in the State with the upcoming general local body election. All public offices and educational institutions will remain closed on that day.

Kerala School and College Holiday: The Kerala Government has announced district-wise public holidays on December 9 and 11 for undertaking in the State with the upcoming general local body election. According to the government announcement, all public offices and educational institutions will remain closed, whereas the commercial establishments will provide paid holidays to their subordinates.

December 9: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam. All the government offices, schools and other related institutes of these regions will remain closed for that day

December 11: Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod. Similar rules regarding the public institutions' closure will also be applied

Government Employees who are voters in any of the above-listed constituencies, however, work in districts where the official holiday has not yet to declared, can apply for the other duty status or for them, special leave will be available in SPARK (excluding earned, casual or commuted leave). They should have proof of the controlling officer who can confirm their voter status.

As per the order, under Section 145A of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, and Section 202A of the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994, the employees in commercial, industrial and private and similar establishments can apply for the paid holiday on polling day. Hence, for them, no wage deduction will be there.

The Labour Commissioner has also announced to ensure compliance for the private enterprises, including the industrial units and IT companies. Similarly, the daily wage earners and the casual workers (who are voters) are also eligible for the paid leave so that they can cast their votes, even if the workplace is outside of these constituencies.
