Krea University to Create a Generation of ‘Thinking Indians’

Kapil Vishwanathan, with the aim to provide an inter-disciplinary world-class university, founded Krea University that will focus towards building thoughtful Indians who will contribute to problem-solving in and outside the University.

The serial entrepreneur and a graduate from Stanford and Harvard, Kapil Viswanathan, with his research, found that 80 out of 100 institutions that survived over five centuries are the educational institutes of the world. With a philanthropic longing to build an academic institution, the idea of Vishwanathan was supported by the former chairman of ICICI Bank, N Vaghul and the chairman of IndusInd Bank, R Seshasayee. With this support and ambition plan, Krea University is opening up its gates for the new admissions.

The main motive of Krea University is to make the Science, Commerce and Humanity fields work hand in hand. Vishwanathan always felt that in the modern world, to create an out-of-the-box creative approach, all the streams should work in sync. That is why he pushes the importance of thought and thinking in his university with a multi-disciplinary approach in thinking.

The admission procedure of the Krea University require the candidates to solve the real world problems in a real environment to be successfully granted admissions in the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Sunder Ramaswamy has said that their aim is to create a positive environment which can catalyze the modern day creative thinking and problem-solving efforts. Prof. Ramaswamy was previously associated as a president with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, California.

This new format of learning has attracted stalwarts in different fields as corporate, academia, etc and they have agreed to put their money, time or both for the disciplinary inter-woven type University. The list includes people such as Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD of Biocon, Dheeraj Hinduja, chairman of Ashok Leyland, Raghuram Rajan, former RBI governor and many more who have given their support to Krea University.

The Krea University is currently running with a 40-acre campus in the Sri City of Andhra Pradesh which is close to Chennai. The University plans to move into a world-class 200-acre campus that is currently in building phrase in the Sri City of Andhra Pradesh.

Currently, the University is offering 3 years of bachelors courses in Science (B.Sc - Honours) and Liberal Arts (B.A. - Honours). A section of the university which is known as Krea’s Institute for Financial Management & Research (IFMR) Graduate School of Business offers a two year MBA programme and a Doctoral (PhD) on the new age business management stream under the leadership of Dean Anantha Nageswaran.

R Seshasayee is the chairman of the Executive Council of Krea University since when it was announced for the first time in 2018, he predicted that the initial attraction of funds will be around 750 crores, informed Raghuram Rajan. The annual fees for studying in the institute will be around Rs. 7 to 8 lakh inclusive of value-added facilities such as hostels etc. Viswanathan has assured that no meritious student will be sent back for any kind of financial crisis the student has. The University will provide scholarships to help the financially backward students study in the world-class academic environment.

The vice chancellor informed that the Krea University will tie up with the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics to integrate a moral compass in the students as well as cultivate the sense of ethics and purpose of human life and aim.
