Madras HC Orders Tamil Nadu Govt to Follow UGC Norms

A petition had been filed against the Tamil Nadu government for not selection candidates as per the rules and regulations stated by the UGC. Sources state the Teachers Recruitment Board and Director of Collegiate did not select the candidates on the basis of their educational qualifications.

A complaint has been risen against the Tamil Nadu government stating that they have been employing teachers who do not even meet the eligibility criteria for the positions. Reviewing the petition that had been raised by various people, the Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu to follow the norms that have been set the University Grants Commission when appointing assistant professors in government colleges.

During a session, Justice S M Subramaniam from the Madurai Bench has stated that any encroachment on the UGC norms or the incorrect implementations of the norm will directly lead to serious action being taken against the officials who took part in the act. He stated that such actions that have been taken by the responsible people will be looked into with serious motives and they will be punished with disciplinary action being taken against them for not implementing the norms.

The court stated that the Tamil Nadu government should be ensuring that all the selection of the teachers as well as their appointments should be made as per the rules and regulations as stated the University of Grants. The court also added that the state needs to comply with the rules and statutes that have been put in place by the government as well along with the UGC norms.

In the words of the court, they said that “teaching is a noble profession” along with it being a skill to be able to teach in a classroom. They added stating that keeping this reason in mind, the state should comply with the rules and appoint the candidates for the different assistant professor positions only when they meet the required qualification for the post. They further added that the candidates must go through the normal pattern that has been mentioned by the UGC to appoint the new assistant professors.

As per the petition, the Teachers Recruitment Board along with Director of Collegiate Education had not been following the norms that have have been stated by the University Grants Commission, along with abiding by the minimum standards education required for the posts.
