Maharashtra government is planning to reserve state quota seats in undergraduate medical even though a similar plan for the state quota reservation for post-graduate medical aspirants was cancelled by the SC.
In this regard, Maharashtra government is currently studying previous Supreme Court orders as well as the SC decisions regarding their appeal for domicile quota in post-graduate medical admissions. The previous SC orders which were given in the first week of May revealed that the state quota reservation will be implemented in deemed institutes only.
Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), Dr. Pravin Shingare said that a deep study is required to ensure there is no wastage of time in fighting matters in court during admissions of this academic year. Shingare added that the law experts are discovering if the previous decision could be replaced only then, the government will be able to introduce a uniform.
A final decision is awaited, which is expected to be taken by the end of this week. A government resolution (GR) will be released soon accordingly.
As per the government resolution (GR) released by the medical educational department on 27th April, the state has denied more than 67 percent of the seats in deemed and private institutes for candidates with the state domicile. Also, it is for the first time that the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), Vimukta Jati Nomadic Tribes, and Other Backwards Classes (OBC) communities will have 25 percent of the seats reserved in deemed medical and dental institutes.

Within three days after the announcement of this GR, the Bombay high court called for a stay on the GR. Also after a week, the apex court upheld the stay. An official from the state medical educational department informed that the petition was abandoned since it was introduced after the commencement of PG admissions in the state. Thus, things have to be plan accordingly for the UG admissions before introducing any new rules for the upcoming admission year.
