The government of Maharashtra requested the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) not to grant approval for any new engineering, degree or diploma colleges for the upcoming academic session. Recently, AICTE directed the state government to submit a detailed perspective plan for setting up new engineering colleges.
In response, the state government expressed its concern about the huge number of vacant seats in engineering colleges every year. The state government conveyed its decision after holding consultation with Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (BATU), Raigad and Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE).

Additional Chief Secretary, Mr. Sitaram Kunte pointed the huge disparity between demand and supply. There are more colleges and fewer takers, he added.
BATU is the single engineering university for all the degree colleges across the state. The new institutes will have to seek varsity’s affiliation. So far, over 70% colleges are affiliated to BATU, and eventually, it would be a single/ common university for all the engineering colleges across the state. Recently, the varsity conducted a study and clarified that there is no necessity for the new colleges for the upcoming academic session.
According to the official data disclosed by the DTE (Directorate of Technical Education), the percentage of vacant seats in the last three years is as follows: -

Recently, AICTE decided to frame a ‘National Perspective Plan’ that would convey about the requirement of professional colleges across the nation.
Apart from Maharashtra, the Government of Telangana and six other states also requested AICTE not to grant approval for new engineering colleges.
