MSDE Lays Down New Affiliation Norms for ITIs

  • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) introduces new affiliation rules for ITIs from the session 2018-19.
  • The new norms have been introduced to keep a check on the quality of education imparted by these colleges.
MSDE Lays Down New Affiliation Norms for ITIs

In order to improve the quality of education at ITI, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has introduced some new affiliation rules for these institutes. These new norms will be applicable to the new institute proposals from the academic session 2018-19.

The step has been taken to keep a check on the mushrooming of unauthorized institutes. The ministry is also planning to receive the new proposals for ITIs through an IT-based platform. The rules will be similar for a total of 13192 ITIs currently functioning in the country and fulfilling the vocational demands across various sectors.

MSDE New Affiliation Norms for ITIs:

  • The ITI application and assessment process has been digitized to make it more effective and time efficient.
  • According to the new norms, the land lease period for ITIs has also been decreased to 10 years.
  • The infrastructure and machinery at the ITIs will be inspected by an expert committee.
  • The ministry will now follow a three-tier assessment process for those who seek affiliation for it is. This will include equipment, infrastructure, power and IT lab assessment.

On January 3, 2018, Anantkumar Hegde, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that over 350 ITIs it is have been de-affiliated across the country.

The reason behind this move was the non-conformity of these institutes to the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) norms, the minister added. Majority of the ITIs de-affiliated were in Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

ITIs are an integral part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship schemes such as Make in India, Smart Cities Digital India and Clean India, as they will provide skilled manpower. The ITIs will ensure that the required training is imparted to students.
