The confusion, disturbance and chaos surrounding the examination schedule released by the University of Mumbai have not only delayed the exams of the first semester but also reduced the time allocated for the next semester. The new exam schedule left affiliated colleges with no other option except to rework their timetable for the rest of the academic session. The officials cited the results mess as the reason for this chaos and disturbance. Even though the Mumbai University has declared the results of all the major colleges, thousands of students are still waiting for their results.

Since MU had been delaying the results of final year exams, the time for the current semester, which ends before Diwali is expected to begin in the second week of November and continue until mid-January 2018. The next semester which usually begins after Diwali has been delayed by two months this year. At present, colleges affiliated to Mumbai University are reworking on their academic calendar with an objective to accommodate maximum lectures while conducting exams.

The Principal of Jai Hind College revealed that classes are run shift wise to accommodate junior college and degree college courses in three streams (including aided and unaided departments). The college cannot conduct lectures during the exams following which the classes for morning or afternoon session will have to be cancelled. The colleges are left with no choice except to work around the examination schedule, he added.

Most of the colleges affiliated to Mumbai University conduct regular classes for degree students in the morning shift while junior college classes are in the afternoon shit. According to the exam schedule released by MU, the colleges will have to conduct exams in two shifts (on some days), leaving the students with no classrooms for regular lectures.

The Principal of Mithibai College pointed that the exams will consume most of the time allocated to the second semester. Teachers have been planning to hold special classes during Sundays and holidays to avoid loss of academic time.

However, many colleges do not want teachers to take special classes during Diwali vacation since many of them have been busy in assessing the papers of last semester. These teachers will be given a break for now, and Christmas vacations will be utilised including Sundays for conducting special classes.

On the other hand, November and December are the two months where many colleges conduct annual festivals. Due to the lack of time for regular lectures and examination schedule, these colleges have postponed their cultural fests by a couple of months.

Currently, colleges are conducting ATKT (Allowed to Keep Term) exams. The examinations for the fresh candidates will begin from November 6, 2017.
