Mumbai University has proposed 49 new colleges for 2019-20 academic session. The university had invited applications for the same in September 2018.

Mumbai University has proposed new colleges out of which there are 9 law colleges, science, commerce (night) colleges, 14 arts, 3 arts, commerce and science (girls only) colleges, 2 fine arts and performing arts colleges, 17 arts and commerce colleges, 3 pharmacy and 1 management college in 2019-2020.

The university had invited applications in September 2018 as per the plan to set up 71 colleges throughout including suburban, Sindhudurg, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Mumbai city from 2019-2020. The proposals were invited from societies, trusts, education boards and institutes according to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016.

The decision on how many colleges will actually qualify will be taken by the education department by the end of next month. The proposals were sent to the Maharashtra State Commission for higher education and development via an affiliation form sent online.

Mumbai University received sixty-eight proposals and after going through the applications, it forwarded 49 out of those to the government. Out of these, eligible colleges will receive a letter of intent by the government and a notification regarding that is expected in the near future, said an official.

There was an advertisement in this regard by the university’s Pro-Vice-chancellor Sunil Bhirud on September 21, 2018. The university had also invited applications for new courses, faculties, subjects, and divisions.

Mumbai University earlier known as the University of Bombay is one of the oldest and reputed Universities in India. It was set up in 1857 and is one amongst the first three Universities in India. The University has a virtual classroom at its Kalina campus and it is the first public university in the nation to start this facility. This facility will be used for live-streaming lectures, seminars, and workshops.
