This year, Nagpur University would be conferring a record number of 800 Doctorates of Philosophy (PhDs) during the 103rd Convocation Ceremony which is scheduled to take place on November 19, 2016. The number of students receiving the degrees has increased this year. During the 102nd Convocation, a total number of 483 students received the degrees.
Nagpur University is famous for awarding a record number of doctorates among the traditional universities across the country. During the 100th Convocation Ceremony, a total number of 998 students were awarded doctorates where former President of India Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam was the chief guest.
Pramod Yeole, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagpur University, mentioned that the varsity has introduced various reforms and there has been a heavy rush to clear old PhDs. The reason is that most of the students do not want to go through new norms which would make it difficult for them to acquire doctorate degrees. Unless the students worked hard, they would not be able to secure doctorate. However, the officials of the university were shocked to see that around 4,500 students are yet to clear their PhD.

He further added that as per new norms, there would not be more than 350-400 registrations this year. On the other hand, the candidates getting PhD would be even fewer. The candidates whose registrations were pending got activated suddenly and the varsity made it mandatory for them to pursue degrees from recognised centres and recognised guides. As per changed norms, a professor can guide only eight students while an associate professor can guide only six students and the assistant professor can guide only four students.
