The Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) will confer the award for the 'best college unit 'and 'best volunteers' under the National Service Scheme (NSS) on April 27 at its campus. A university circular was issued on April 18, stating that the district-level awards will be conferred to those who have done exceptional work in their respective colleges.
"Almost 250 SUK-affiliated colleges with an NSS unit. "The university has already won the state-level NSS award in the academic year 2012-13, for their work in the social sphere. Our unit officials also were honored for their work in the community. We are sure that the latest awards, to be conferred by the university, will boost the morale of the students and encourage them to continue with the good work."

Since 1969 the Shijvaji University NSS Cell is organizing from time to time varied types of outreach programs, viz., Program related to property rights or legal awareness for poor people, awareness about poverty alleviation programs / Schemes, literacy (including women literacy), coaching for needy children, special coaching programs for the socially and economically backward students, gender rights, consumer rights, prevention of environmental pollution, eco-conservation, planting of saplings and preservation, arsenic-free water, surface water management, child health care, family planning, blood donation, anti-drug and anti-alcohol awareness, health and hygiene consciousness, book distribution, campus cleaning and beautification, drainage maintenance, rural road maintenance. Most of these programs are organized by the NSS units.
