The search-cum-selection committee (SCSC) panel has shortlisted ten aspirants for the University Grants Commission (UGC)'s chairperson post under the supervision of the yoga therapist, HR Narendra. Further, three names will be forwarded to the Union human resources development (HRD) ministry on 17th May after a personal interview with the candidates.
According to the release, following people are among those who have been shortlisted:
- Mr. R S Kureel, the vice-chancellor of B. R. Ambedkar University of Social Sciences (Madhya Pradesh)
- Y. Narasimhulu, Rayalseema University head
- Yogesh Singh, the vice-chancellor of Delhi Technological University (DTU)
- Anil Sahasrabudhe, the chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)
- G.C/ Tripathi, the vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University
- D.P. Singh, the chief of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)

Ved Prakash retired as the chairman of UGC on 3rd April 2017. He was elected on 18th January 2013 as the chairman with the tenure period of five years or until he turns sixty-five, whichever condition is satisfied earlier. The procedure for appointing the vice-chairperson and chairperson of UGC is under process.
As announced in the budget, the selection of the new chairperson will lead the UGC’s restructuring. The Centre is working on a roadmap to regulate in such a way that it inspires autonomy and encourages minimal regulation. Initialising this, a committee had been set up for reviewing all the UGC regulations and to give suggestions for discarding of out-dated ones.

K.P. Joshipura, the former head of Saurashtra University and D.P. Singh, the former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University are also the members of SCSC panel.
