Over the years, many students across India and abroad have been choosing online and distance courses. This has been the result of improved quality of education along with the variety of courses that are available for education in online mode in the fields of management, arts and other disciplines.
With the rise in the demand for online and distance courses in India, the government of Punjab has decided to approve the establishment of the Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University. As per the proposal, the Open University will be established in Patiala.
Sources state that a Bill regarding the establishment of the Open University will be presented in the next Assembly Session. The Assembly Session will see the authorisation of the Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Act 2019.
To commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the decision was taken at the special Cabinet which had been held at Batala town in Gurdaspur district. Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh chaired the meeting, where the decision was taken.
In a statement released by a spokesperson of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), stated that the decision has been made considering the “global shift in the nature of education”. The spokesperson stated that the number of students who have been choosing online or distance courses has been increasing over the years. This major shift in the nature of education and the immense demand for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) across the globe has convinced the Punjab Government to make the decision to establish an Open University.
