Dr. Ajay K Sharma has been appointed Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Punjab Technical University (PTU) Kapurthala. The post was vacant for the past three years. He has been appointed on a full-time basis for Punjab Technical University. Prior to this post, he was the Director of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Delhi with additional charge of NIT Hamirpur campus of NIT Delhi.
The Vice-Chancellor has been appointed at the time when Punjab Technical University is under controversy due to his predecessor Rajneesh Arora. He was arrested by the vigilance department for questionable activities in appointments and financial transactions. Arora surrendered in January 2015, after completing his two tenures consecutively, of three years each and for two more years during SAD-BJP governance.

Office Secretary to Punjab Governor, J M Balamurugan issued the appointment notification of Dr Ajay K Sharma on 22 January, 2018. The notification mentioned the tenure of the Vice-chancellor of PTU.
Dr. Ajay graduated in 1986 from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. After his graduation, he did masters in 1994 from Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) Pilani. His highest qualification is of a doctorate degree in networks and broadband optical communication systems with experience of over 15 years as professor of electronics, computer science and communication engineering at NIT Jalandhar.
272 research papers has been published by Ajay K Sharma. The research papers were based on international journals, national journals and conferences. He has also published 12 books. 48 M.Tech and 18 Ph. D thesis has been completed under supervision of Dr. Ajay K Sharma.

International journals like Digital Signal Processing, Optical Engineering, Optics Communication and Optics letters have Dr. Ajay K Sharma as their technical reviewer. He was also appointed as associate of 'Technical Committee on Telecom' under IASTD Canada. The term period was 2004-2007. Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) New Delhi, has Dr Sahrma as their lifetime member.
