National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur is one of the country's 31 NITs, founded on August 7, 1986, as Regional Engineering College, a collaborative and cooperative venture of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. At the time of its founding, NIT Hamirpur only had two departments, Civil and Electrical Engineering, each with a 30-student intake. It was elevated to the National Institute of Technology and given the status of Deemed University on June 26, 2002. NIT Hamirpur is a national institute established by an act of Parliament, the National Institute of Technology Act 2007, which the President of India signed on June 5, 2007.
