Education Minister of Punjab, Mr. Charanjit Singh confirmed that Punjab Technical University (PTU) would get a new Vice-Chancellor soon. The process for the appointment of VC is underway and the responsibility of nominating the names for the post of VC has been assigned to a three-member committee. The selection of Vice Chancellor is purely based on the norms prescribed the state government. He further assured that there would not be any political influence in this regard.
Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar is also one of the members of the committee. Director of IIT Ropar along with a few officials associated with the premier technical institute will help the government in setting up Skill Development University at Chamkur Sahib.

Earlier, Punjab Technical University had shut down 4 out of 9 Punjab Institutes of Technology. Due to the poor response from the students, the varsity had decided to shut down four institutes and transform them into skill development centres. Students are not evincing keen interest to join Punjab Institutes of Technology as these institutes have failed to meet the purpose. These institutes also lack necessary infrastructure and quality faculty. Therefore, students are opting for better options.

When the state government established Punjab Institutes of Technology, it assured that these institutes would provide IIT standard of education. However, the institutes failed to provide IIT standard education or recruit IIT standard faculty members. Instead of developing the institutes, the varsity closed them indicating that it was mere wastage of funds. The situation of the other five PITs is better.
