SC orders NBE to hold single-shift NEET PG 2025 Exam : On May 30, the Supreme Court directed the National Board of Examination (NBE) to conduct the NEET PG 2025 examination in a single shift on June 15 . A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice NK Anjaria passed the order. The court believes that necessary arrangements can be made to avoid unfairness caused by multiple shift examinations in the past. With two weeks left before the exam, the court is convinced that NBE can ensure all candidates appear on a single day and shift.

The court's decision aims to bring transparency and fairness to the examination process, which is crucial for the medical profession. By holding the exam in a single shift, the court hopes to eliminate any potential biases or discrepancies that may arise from multiple shifts. This move is expected to benefit the candidates and ensure a level playing field.

NBE's Concerns

Senior Advocate Maninder Acharya for NBE countered that there aren't enough exam centres available, requiring 900 extra centres, which is not feasible before June 15. NBE suggested normalisation, as done in exams like CAT and IIT JEE, to account for difficulty level differences between shifts. Normalisation involves adjusting scores based on the difficulty level of each shift, ensuring that candidates are not unfairly disadvantaged.

However, the court questioned the effectiveness of normalisation in ensuring absolute fairness. The court noted that even with normalisation, some discrepancies might still exist, which could impact the candidates' scores.

Court's Decision

The court remains unconvinced by NBE's concerns, stating that normalisation isn't foolproof. The court notes that if NEET UG, which had a larger number of applicants, could be conducted in a single shift, there's no reason why NEET PG cannot follow suit. The court directed NBE to hold the examination in a single shift, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The court's decision is a significant step towards ensuring the integrity of the examination process. By holding the exam in a single shift, the court aims to eliminate any potential biases or discrepancies that may arise from multiple shifts.

Representation

Senior Advocate Shikhil Suri, Advocates Vidhisha Swarup, Dr. Charu Mathur, Avani Bansal , and others appeared for the petitioners. The petitioners argued that a single-shift exam would be more transparent and fair, and the court agreed. The court's decision is expected to benefit the candidates and ensure a smooth conduct of the exam.
