The Savitribai Phule Pune University law students have demanded Marathi as an option in exams. The students have raised the issue to attempt the exams in Marathi. Over a few days, there have been constant debates on language barrier issue at SPPU. According to some of the students, it is difficult for them to attempt exams in English due to their background.
Vishu Nijamkar, SSPU student said that he has completed class 12 from a Marathi- medium school. Therefore, it makes it difficult for him to understand the law subjects in English course. Therefore, the varsity should provide them with an option to attempt exams in Marathi and to provide study material in the same.
One of the other SSPU students, Tejas Khadtare said that professors should also teach in Marathi for the better understanding. One of the main reason is that there are many students in the varsity from a Marathi-medium background, and the transition to academia in English is not easy.
Students from the university have now approached Maharashtra Navnirman Yuva Sena regarding the same. The students have claimed that in the Bar Council Examination they have an option to attempt the exams in 11 languages, and Marathi is included in it. Thus, SSPU should also make the provision for the same and allow the students to attempt the exams in the Marathi language.
