The HRD ministry is planning to introduce ‘Swayam’, a Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform on August 15. The platform will provide more than 2,000 courses to about three crore students all over India.
Full-fledged preparations are going on ever since the inception of the platform in order to get it ready on due time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Swayam’ at a special event.
Shedding more light on the platform, a source in the ministry said that this platform will revolutionize the education system and will be a source of knowledge for a lot of aspiring students. The source also informed that the preparations will likely be completed if the work goes on the same pace.
Swayam has been launched with the objective to provide Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and improved quality of education on many of the subjects. These courses will cover many subjects at the school level, from classes 9 to 12 as well as undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in various fields.
The platform will provide near to 2000 courses that will be launched backed by a network that will probably support 10 lakh concurrent users at any point of time.
The idea behind the portal was to provide high-quality e-content to all colleges and universities without any charges. HRD Ministry partnered with Microsoft to set Swayam in place for Indian students.
Officials stated, “When completed, it would bring in interactive eContent on MOOCs format of more than 2.5 lakh hours which would make it the world’s biggest repository of interactive electronic learning resource under a single window.”
As per the officials, this platform will enable students to take up courses offered by the best teachers on SWAYAM. Students belonging to backward locations, where education is not in its best state can benefit from this digital platform and get a quality education regardless of their location.
