Tamil Nadu Extends Financial Support, Lodging Facilities for NEET Takers

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswamy announced that the government is ready to provide financial assistance to NEET applicants in Tamil Nadu who were allotted exam centres in Kerala/ other states. Recently, the Supreme Court of India has also given clarity in this regard stating that NEET aspirants will have to appear for the exam in the centres allotted to them. The court indicated that there would be no rearrangement of exam centres for the students in Tamil Nadu. This year, many NEET aspirants from Tamil Nadu will have to travel to other states like Kerala to take NEET Exam.

Far-off exam centres have become difficult for the economically weaker sections to arrange for travel and accommodation. Considering the miserable situation of the students, CM of Tamil Nadu announced that all the students who were allotted exam centres outside the state would be issued second-class train tickets. Similarly, these students will be paid an addition of Rs. 1,000 towards other expenses. One attendant travelling with the student will also be provided second-class train ticket along with Rs. 1,000.

Students who were allotted exam centres outside the state will have to consult the District Education Officer before their journey to collect train ticket and Rs. 1,000.

A noted actor in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Prasanna has come forward to sponsor travel expenses of at least two NEET applicants from the state. On the other hand, AMMK Party led by Mr. Dinakaran announced that they would help the NEET centres by providing lodging facilities in Kerala. The part has already made arrangements for providing lodging facility to students.

CM of Tamil Nadu further directed the students to call the toll free number 14417 if they face any difficulty.

At the same time, Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan directed the police chiefs and district collectors to arrange help desks at bust stations and railway stations to guide NEET aspirants in case of any difficulty. Over 5,371 students from Tamil Nadu will be attending NEET exam at centres in Ernakulam, Kerala. The state government is also taking steps to make sure that NEET aspirants reach the exam centres on time, he explained.

Earlier, students had filed a petition in the High Court of Madras that directed CBSE to arrange for the exam centres in the state itself. However, CBSE challenged the decision of Madras HC in Supreme Court. The apex court rejected the directive of Madras HC and accepted CBSE’s plea that there was limited time to rearrange for the new exam centres.
