Due to the sudden demise of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha on December 5, 2016, most of the universities across the state postponed semester examinations. The state government declared December 5 to 8, 2016 as mourning days and all the schools and colleges remain closed. The colleges, schools and universities will start functioning from today, i.e., December 9, 2016.

Bharathiar University has already postponed the exams which were scheduled to take place between December 6 to 12, 2016. However, the varsity did not announce the revised schedule for the examinations.
Similarly, Anna University has also postponed the examinations which were scheduled to take place between December 6 to 8, 2016. On the other hand, Madras University declared holidays till December 9, 2016.
Apart from Tamil Nadu, some of the universities and colleges in the neighbouring states like Kerala and Karnataka also declared a holiday for one day in respect to Jayalalithaa. Some of the universities in Kerala postponed exams too.

According to the official website of Anna University, the exams which were cancelled on December 1 & 2, 2016, due to cyclone Nada have been postponed to December 11 & 18, 2016.
Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha has passed away on December 5, 2016, due to cardiac arrest. Her funeral took place on December 6, 2016, at Marina Beach, Chennai where lakhs of people across the state were present to pay atribute to their beloved Chief Minister.
