The Mumbai University has issued a circular regarding grading formula for the promotion of all students except the final year students. They will be promoted on the basis of the internals and other projects and also on the basis of the student's performance in the previous semester.

MU Promotion of First and Second Year Students

Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant had directed all the universities in Maharashtra to promote all students, except final year students on the basis of gradation formula. So, in the light of that, the University of Mumbai (MU) has released a circular regarding the rules of gradation. According to the MU notification, the university has asked all the affiliated colleges to promote the students from non-traditional courses on a 50-50 formula wherein 50 per cent is for the internal assessment and other projects in the current semester and the other 50 per cent is on the basis of the student's performance in the previous semester. If any internal exams haven't been completed, the colleges are required to conduct those online or through a phone call.

The students who are pursuing traditional courses such as BCom, BA and BSc who don't have any internal marks component, will be promoted basis their performance in the previous semester alone. The circular also mentioned that the colleges should work on the gradation process for all students and the results should be out accordingly so that the institutes can begin the admission process for all students for the next academic year. The education minister had requested state universities to schedule all final year exams between July 1 and 30, however, later, he approached the UGC to seek permission to do away with the final year exams and promote all students on the basis of their previous performance.

Earlier, MU had also stated that the students with Allowed-To-Keep-Term (ATKT) remarks in their previous semesters will be promoted to the next academic year. “Instead of wasting another academic year, these students will be given a chance to get promoted to the next year and the only condition is they would have to clear these subjects within 120 days of the start of the 2020-21 academic year.

The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union had penned down a letter to the VC and has asked not to declare any tentative schedule as of now for conducting exams as that would lead to students’ stress. The teachers have mentioned there are lakh of households which have lost their daily income due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in the country. There is a lack of data on how many university students have been impacted directly so amid all this, it is pertinent to take careful measures.
